Business Description

“Venta de duro .10” says a small sign outside a house off the dirt road in Quebrada Onda.  Mother and daughter duo, Ester and Yamilka, have been selling duros from their home for the past year.  A duro is a  popular, sweet, frozen treat, about the size of a hand, like a popsicle in a baggie made from ingredients  such as fresh fruit juice, water, milk, sugar. The income generated from the duros is used to pay the  electricity.

Current Status:

Business Information:

  •  Saved to buy a small freezer to keep them in, holds about 30 duros at a time.
  • Main clientele is school children and neighbors.
  • Señora Ester makes different flavors such as pineapple, milk, guanabana, koolaid, and more. She buys most of the ingredients in the town of Santa Fe, about 10 minutes away by car and some of the ingredients at the supermarket across the street from her community.
  • Each duro sells for $0.10; she sells them 2 or 3 days per week, especially when the children are in school.

Business Opportunity:

  • Each duro sells for $0.10, which is less than most of the competition who sell them at $0.15
  • She would like to have a larger freezer to sell more products
  • She is in the process of finishing university, studying an IT course.

Business Obstacles:

  • She is not part of the community bank
  • Do not have any type of bookkeeping system to track how much they produce and sell, profit and loss.
  • Competition; there is also another small store that sells them nearby.
  • She does not have a name for her kiosk and can’t differentiate herself from the competition.

Your Task

  • First, get to know your client and his business.  Build a trust between you and your client.
  • Unleash her inner potential, provide her basic accounting tools like a daily ledger to track her income and expenses. Offer your client consultancy in how to better manage a business.
  • Learn about his business' strengths and weaknesses.
  • Based on your recommendations, update/supplement this business profile.
