Embera Puru is located just inside the Darién Province, bordered to

the west by El Tirao and by Arimae to the East.  One of Embera Puru's

main challenges is that the Pan-American Highway in this area is of

extremely poor quality.  Accessing the community is difficult and slow.

The nearest health center is a health post in El Tirao, which is

severely understaffed and lacks most necessary supplies.  In Santa

Fe, about 40 minutes away by bus, is a better-functioning health

center.  There, nurses and doctors are available in the morning, and

medications are usually available.  It is costly and inconvenient for

community members to travel to the health center, so they are very

excited to have access to better care through Global Brigades.

Community Demographics

Embera Puru is home to about 250 people and has about 40 homes,

with an average of 6 inhabitants per home.  Embera Puru is primarily

an indigenous community of the Embera culture.  The health care

center in Santa Fe is shared by nearby communities such as Aguas

Frias, Arimae, El Tirao, Pueblo Nuevo, Quebrada Honda, Zapallal,

and Zimba.

Brigade Site Information

With the cooperation of the Education Ministry and the local school

director, Medical and Dental Brigades host clinics in the community

school. The school consists of 5 classrooms, a kitchen, and a cafeteria so we have the ability to set up each clinic station in its own classroom.  The school's recreation area also has a volleyball net to keep younger patients engaged in an active lifestyle. Volunteers will see an average of 90 patients per day.
