Torti Abajo Medical Access

Torti Abajo is a community located in the hills of Eastern Panama, off the

Pan-American highway, near the town of Torti.  Due to its proximity to Torti,

Torti Abajo has good access to the nearby center of health.  However, the

health center is not staffed with an overabundance of doctors, so some

community members must travel to the hospital in Chepo (2 hours away).

Additionally, the newly constructed health center in Torti is not yet fully

operational as the construction costs were greater than the Ministry of

Health initially anticipated.

Community Demographics

Torti Abajo is home to about 300 people and has about 80 homes,
with an average of 3-4 inhabitants per home.  Torti Abajo is primarily a

Latino community.  The health care center in Torti is shared by nearby

communities such as Playa Chuzo, Guacuco Guna, Guacuco Latino,

Ipeti Embera, Ipeti Colono, and Ibedi Guna.

Brigade Site Information

With the cooperation of the Education Ministry and the local school

director, Medical and Dental Brigades host clinics in the community

school. The school consists of three classrooms and a comedor

(cafeteria-type room) so we have the ability to set up each clinic station

in its own classroom. Volunteers will see an average of 80-100 patients

per day.
