Guacuco Latino is located in the Panama province, in the Eastern region

between Lago Bayano and the town of Tortí.  In order to receive medical

attention, community members must travel to Tortí's healthcare center

(about 30 minutes away) or to Chepo's hospital (about 2 hours away).

About 30% of the community has latrines, and none of the families have

their own personal water filter in their home.

Community Demographics

Guacuco Latino is home to about 600 people and has about 250 homes,
with an average of 2-3 inhabitants per home.  Guacuco Latino is bordered

by the indigenous community Guacuco Guna, so many medical/dental

brigades in Guacuco Latino see indigneous patients as well.  As its name

implies, the vast majority of people living in Guacuco Latino are of Latin

descent.  The community mostly earns its living through agriculture, but

some community members work in unskilled labor and cattle ranching as

well.

Brigade Site Information

Medical/dental brigades' clinics are hosted in Guacuco Latino's elementary

school.  The school has seven classrooms, a computer center, a dining

room, a kitchen, and a playground.  Medical/dental brigades typically use

each classroom as a different station of the clinic structure.  The school

is located in the center of the community.
