Ibedi Guna Medical Access

Ibedi Guna is a community in East Panama, located along the

scenic Pan-American highway near the town of Torti.  Ibedi Guna

has a health center maintained by Panama's Ministry of Health,

MINSA (Ministerio de Salud).  However, the health center frequently

does not have a full pharmacy and is unable to see all patients on

a regular basis.

Community Demographics

Ibedi Guna is home to about 1,000 people and has about 100 homes,

with an average of 10 inhabitants per home.  Ibedi Guna is an

indigenous community of the Guna culture.

Brigade Site Information

Since space is limited in the health center, we hold brigades at the

school. The school is still relatively small, with 6 classrooms.

Despite the smaller space, we always run a successful brigade.
Volunteers will see an average of 90 patients per day, and doctors

typically spend about 15 minutes with each patient.  Brigades are

able to provide an average of 5-6 adult charlas a day, totaling about

6 hours of adult health education each brigade.
