the Accra – Cape Coast Highway. Public transportation is available
for community members.
Available Medical Facilities
There is a Community Health Planning and Services Clinic in the
community, therefore community members in Ebuakwa and
neighboring communities have easy access to Nurses and Health
Volunteers. The Essuesyhia Clinic is a larger facility and is about a 10
to 15 minute drive away. The nearest Regional Hospital is in Saltpond,
which is a 10-20 minute drive.
District Information
The Ekumfi District has 57 communities with a total population of around 65,775. There are 7 CHPS Zones servicing the Ekumfi area, which are equipped with Community Nurses, Midwives and Volunteers. There are 5 Public and Private Clinics in the district that offer more services than the local CHPS Zones. The closest district hospital is in the neighboring district of Mfantseman in the town of Saltpond. However, the closest regional hospital with a large variety of services is located in Cape Coast, approximately a
1 hour drive from Mankessim.
Community Volunteers
In fact, Ebuakwa took the initiative themselves to build the structure of the CHPS Zone. The Government of Ghana recognized their efforts and staffed the facility with nurses. The nurses diagnose common illnesses in the region and give out the associated medication. More advanced cases
are referred to the closest Health Center with a doctor. The 2 Community Health Volunteers in the community work closely with the nurses and help them with health education and communication. They are volunteers and trained by the government in first aid for children ages 0-5 as well as weighing and measuring children.
