About Granadilla
Granadilla is a commuity in the municipality of Moroceli. There are about
73 houses with a popoulation of 385 people. Community members in
Granadilla experience a lack of clean water, personal hygiene, sanitation
infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Common colds, skin rashes,
parasites, and diarrheal diseases are common. Few homes have concrete
floors, proper functioning latrines, adequate water storage, or efficient
stoves with chimneys. The closest health center is in El Campo, which is
an hour walk from Granadilla. It is not consistently staffed nor stocked with
an adequate supply of medicine. School is only offered until 6th grade in
Granadilla. There are 80 students and it is approximated that about 70%
of the community knows how to read and write.
Granadilla's Water Challenge
Granadilla does not have an effective, functioning water system. Each
day, members of the community retrieve water from a nearby well that
does not run on an electricity pump. The water is chlorinated once a week.
Each home is responsible for water retrieval and often times the water tank
is contaiminated by people reaching to take out water in jugs.

Water System Design in Granadilla
Engineering Brigaders began designing a water system in Granadailla in
July 2014. Throughout the following months, these volunteers worked with
community members to:
• Locate a viable source near the community
• Test the quantity and quality of the water at the source
• Measure approximately 6,600 meters of the future water system
• Place stakes at 100 meter intervals to mark the future system
• Plan 104 household connections to the system
To ensure the sustainability of the project, the Engineering Team has been working very closely with the current Water Council throughout the design process, including locating the nearest water sources near the community, meet at least one household member from each house to discuss where they would like their faucet, updating them on soil tests, etc. The Water Council, as shown above at the very top of the page, has also been training and educating themselves on their responsibilites of being on a water council, water fees, water systems, and how to continue the system on their own. Their patience, dedication, and commitment to bringing access to clean water has helped facilitate this design process tremendously and will continue the sustainability of the design and water project in Granadailla.
