Luis Valle
Global Brigades met 11 year-old Luis Valle on a brigade in January 2011 where it was discovered that he was diabetic. The Medical Brigade group from USC decided to take on Luis’s case and help him gain control of his diabetes. The group has since raised over $1,500 for this case!
Dr. Soriano and team were able to assist Luis in country in getting several necessary laboratory tests, including a chest x-ray, ultrasound of his abdomen, and an echocardiogram. With the dedication and continued support from this student group, Luis Valle has been equipped with an indefinite supply of insulin from the healthcare company and a world leader in diabetes
care company called Nova Noridisk.
Furthermore, Novo Nordisk was able to supply Luis with insulin that doesn’t require refrigeration, which is a huge advantage as Luis and his family hive in a home with no electricity.
Previously, Luis’s dad would have to walk two hours each way up and down
the mountain every morning to the health center to get his son’s medication,
which was packed in a travel cooler for transport. Now, Luis is able to keep
his medication in his home which greatly reduces the strain on his whole
family. Global Brigades has been in contact with Luis and his family and we
are happy to say that he has been doing great.
We would like to express our gratitude for the group from US for making this possible. And a special thanks goes out to Dennis at Novo Nordisk for his incredible contribution. Thanks to all of the donors and to those who supported and continue to support this patient. Because of your efforts,
Luis will be able to reach adulthood and live a healthy normal life.
Update on Luis' Care - June 2011
During a brigade in June 2011, Dr. Soriano met with Luis and was pleased to find that his large
abdomen has become remarkably less noticeable since he has gotten control of his blood sugar.
