Top Three Needs Expressed
• Construction of latrines or sanitation systems to eliminate the amount of fecal matter around family's homes. Most families in the community either have a old, broken-down latrines or have no latrine at all.
• The presence of more Medical Brigades in the community
• Availability of medications via the community health center
Children in the community of San Luis as well as children from surrounding communities attend a one-floor schoolhouse. Around 165 primary students and around 132 students attend secondary school in the afternoon due to staffing and capacity constraints. In addition, around 36 students attend classes to study agroforestry.
A water system was constructed 15 years ago by a government supported organization, FISE. This system supplies water to 52% of the community houses every day at every hour. A natural pool that supplies the source of water for the houses is delivered to the houses through a gravity system. Families pay a consumption fee to cover operational expenses.
The health center located in the community was constructed by an organization called "Valencianos por Nicaragua" in coordination with the Nicaraguan government. The center contains three consultation rooms, a waiting room, and a pharmacy. However, most of year the center is not stocked with enough medications and supplies to provide for the patients that come through the center. In addition, there are no permanent medical staff except for one nurse.
San Luis is located in a particularly humid region of Nicaragua, where the primary economic activity is the cultivation of rice and beans. Other vegetables and coffee are also grown in the area. A small portion of families work in the cattle and livestock industry and another small portion work in the business sector, mostly running small 'pulperías', or general stores.
Most houses are constructed using wood pillars and bamboo, stones, and clay are used to construct the walls. To construct the roofs, local wood and red slates (created by cooking red clay) are used.
