There is one school in the community constructed by the Nicaraguan government with the support of the Japanese government. Around 219 primary students and 115 secondary students attend the school either in the morning or afternoon session. As this community is centrally located, the school provides an education for many students from surrounding communities.
The central government, through the Social Investment Fund Program (FISE), built a water system 15 years ago to supply water to the community. Water is supplied to 43% of the homes all day and is under the administration of a local water committtee. The monthly operational cost per family is C$26.50 (around US$1.00).
This community has one health center in the area, constructed by the Nicaraguan government, that contains two consultation stations, a waiting room, and a pharmacy. However, for most of the year the center is not stocked with enough medical staff to run the center full-time. There is a permanent nurse that works at the clinic but often there are no medical supplies to provide adequate healthcare to patients in the area.
The community of Regadillo is located in one of the poorest regions in the Estelí department of Nicaragua. According to local records, 90% of the population is categorized as living below the poverty line, with the other 10% living in "semi-comfortable" conditions. The community is located in a partially dry region of Estelí, characterized by its production of mainly corn and beans. A small portion of families in the community work with cattle or livestock and a smaller portion of families work in the business sector. In addition, a factory that processes tobacco employs approximately 300 local employees. After opening 5 years ago, the business has brought some economic growth to the region.
