Santa Librada Medical Access

Santa Librada is located within the Darién province, 25 kilometers past Metetí and 26 kilometers before Yaviza, the end of the Pan-American Highway.  The nearest health center is an abandoned health post inCanglon, a neighboring community.  The nearest functioning health center is about 45 minutes away in Metetí.  There, nurses and doctors are available in the morning, and medications are usually available.  It is costly and inconvenient to travel to the health center, so the community is very excited to have better access to better care through Global Brigades. The monst common seen illnesses are muscular pain, parasites and common cold.

Community Demographics

Santa Librada is home to about 800 people and has about 300 homes, with an average of 2-3 inhabitants per home.  Santa Librada is primarily a Latino community.  The health care center in  is shared by nearby communities such as Villa Darién, Portuchada, Nicanor, Buenos Aires, and

Arreti.

Brigade Site Information

With the cooperation of the Education Ministry and the local school director, Medical and Dental Brigades host clinics in the community school. The school consists of 6 classrooms, a kitchen, a cafeteria, a teachers'office, a playground, a computer lab, a school garden, a soccer field, and a classroom for special education.  In effect,  we have the ability to set up each clinic station in its own classroom. Volunteers will see an average of 80-100 patients per day.
