Nicanor is a community located in the Darién province of Eastern
Panama, approximately 45 minutes away from the town of Tortí.
Nicanor does not have its own health care center; therefore,
community members must travel to Metetí to receive medical and
dental attention when brigades are not visiting the community,
both for routine and emergency care. However, even at the health
care center, it is rare that community members able to access all
of the medical treatment that they need.
Community Demographics
Nicanor is home to about 550 people and has about 80 homes,
with an average of 6-7 inhabitants per home. Nicanor's
community members principally identify themselves as Latino,
but there are also nearby indigenous communities that may
send patients to brigades' clinics.
Brigade Site Information
We typically hold Nicanor's medical/dental clinics in the
community's elementary school. The school is fairly small,
but it is large enough to host our clinic structure. The school
has 3 classrooms, a computer center, a kitchen, a dining
room, and a library. Medical/dental brigades at Nicanor
typically see 80-100 patients each clinic day.
