Las Animas Healthcare Access
Las Animas, Cedros is a community located at a lower elevation close to a main highway running through the country. This community does not have a health center due to its smaller size. If they need to see a doctor or dentist, they must travel the mountainous terrain to Cedros, the nearest town with a health center. This health center is a CESAMO, or the larger of the two different types of health centers the Honduran government offers. Here, patients can see both doctors and nurses and even possibly a dentist. Unfortunately, the trip to the health center takes over 1.5 hours on foot. There are no buses that connect the community with the town that the health center is located in, so the majority of community members must walk to reach the health center.
Community Demographics
Las Animas is home to about 120 people and has about 45 homes, with an average of 3 inhabitants per home. Las Animas is more removed than many communities and there are no buses that connect the community with larger urban areas. Therefore, they do not have good access to resources outside of the community. About 10 smaller communities near Las Animas come to receive medical and dental care while brigades are there.
Brigade Site Information
Since this community does not have a health center, we hold brigades at the school. The school is relatively small, with about 4 rooms. Despite the smaller space, we always run a successful brigade. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and we are able to provide 5-6 educational charlas a day. Each brigade sees an average of 215 patients per day.
