La Moneda is a community located in the hills of the Darién province,

off the Pan-American highway, near the town of Metetí.  La Moneda

does not have its own health center.  Formerly, there was a health post in the

in the nearby community of Rio Iglesias, but now that community no longer has

no longer has a health center; the health post has been abandoned.  Community

Community members must travel either to the health center in Metetí (30-45 minutes

(30-45 minutes away) or the hospital in Chepo (4 hours away).

Community Demographics

La Moneda is home to about 300 people and has about 150 homes,
with an average of 2-3 inhabitants per home.  La Moneda is primarily

a Latin community, but it is located near the Emberá-Wounaan comarcas

Brigade Site Information

With the cooperation of the Education Ministry and the local school

director, Medical and Dental Brigades host clinics in the community

school. The school consists of classrooms, a teachers'room, a kitchen,

and a comedor (cafeteria-type room) so we have the ability to set up

each clinic station in its own room. Volunteers will see an average of

80-100 patients per day. Additionally, patients in La Moneda come

from neighboring communities; some may travel up to several hours

by horseback or by foot to seek treatment.
