Ipeti Colono is a community located along the scenic Pan-American

highway near the town of Torti in the Panama Este province.  The

people of Ipeti Colono travel to Torti to use its health center; no health

center exists within Ipeti Colono.  Although Torti's health center is fairly

close by, the health center is not always fulled staffed and may not

have the medications in its pharmacy to fully treat its patients.

Community Demographics

Ipeti Colono is home to about 300 people and has about 80 homes,

with an average of 4 inhabitants per home.  Citizens of Ipeti Colono

share Torti's health center with several other nearby communities

including Torti itself, Torti Abajo, Ipeti Embera, and Ibedi Guna; these

communities, when combined, include close to 9,000 people.  The

health center in Torti is unable to handle the needs of this many people.

Brigade Site Information

Since space is limited in Torti's health center, we hold brigades at the

school. The school is still relatively small, with about 5 rooms.

Despite the smaller space, we always run a successful brigade.
Volunteers will see an average of 215 patients per day, and doctors

typically spend about 10 minutes with each patient.  Brigades are

able to provide an average of 5-6 adult charlas a day, totaling about

9-10 hours of adult health education each brigade.
