Hoya Grande Healthcare Access

Hoya Grande is a community located about 45 minutes away from the center of its municipality, Moroceli. The community has access to a local health center that is at most a 20 minute walk for community members. This local health center is known as a CESAR, which is the smaller of the two different types of health centers provided by the government. It is usually staffed by at least one auxiliary nurse and occassionally community health workers. Currently there is need for more medication and the actual structure is in need of repairs. Should a visitor to the health center require more medical attention than can be given at the center, community members can travel to the hospitals in Tegucigalpa or Villas de San Francisco most commonly by bus or on foot. Overall, Hoya Grande has a decent health center that is readily accessible.

Community Demographics

Hoya Grande is home to about 1,358 people and has about 388 homes, with an average of 5 inhabitants per home. It is the located off the exit of the main road in El Paraiso and is surrounded by about 8 other, smaller communities: Las Tablas, El Centro, Eden, La Jolloota, La Vijia, Encino, El Eden and La Cuesta. Since the nearest health center is in Hoya Grande, these smaller communities must walk down the dirt road to seek care. They also attend the medical brigades that take place in Hoya Grande.

Brigade Site Information

Since space is limited in the health center, brigades are held at the school. The school is fairly large and the classrooms are close to one another, with about 5 large rooms for brigade stations and plenty of outdoor space for charlas. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and volunteers are able to provide 5-6 educational charlas a day.  Each brigade sees an average of 300 patients per day.
