El Obraje Healthcare Access
El Obraje is located in the Danlí municipality of the El Paraíso department. The community has access to a local health center in Jutiapa that is about a 40 minute walk for community members. This local health center is known as a CESAMO, which is the larger of the two different types of health centers provided by the government. It is usually staffed by at least one doctor and several nurses. On occasion, community members have access to a dentist.
Community Demographics
El Obraje is home to about 1,283 people and has about 305 homes, with an average of 4 inhabitants per home.
Brigade Site Information
Since space is limited in the health center, brigades are held at the school. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and volunteers are able to provide 5-6 educational charlas a day. Each brigade sees an average of 300 patients per day.
Current Community Initiatives
El Obraje has received medical brigades from the Program for Area Development (PDA) by World Vision, however this is exclusively for kids who are sponsored through their program. PDA is also providing a nutritional lunch program for kids in the school system. ALA 8620 and FORCUENCAS have helped with water access in nearby villages, alleviating some of the water burden on El Obraje.
