Ekumfi Egyankwaa is approximately a 20 minute drive from the main road,

the Accra – Cape Coast Highway. Public transportation is available for

community members.

Available Medical Facilities

The Health Clinic in the neighboring community, Esueshyia is a large

health clinic (bigger than a CHPS Zone). In addition to 6 full-time nurses

it has a visiting doctor. In terms of facilities it has 4 rooms with 2 beds

each as well as a pharmacy, a lab and a consultation room. There are

no doctors present at the clinic but it has electricity and water.

District Information

The Ekumfi District has 57 communities with a total population of around

65,775. There are 7 CHPS Zones servicing the Ekumfi area, which are

equipped with Community Nurses, Midwives and Volunteers. There are

5 Public and Private Clinics in the district that offer more services than

the local CHPS Zones. The closest district hospital is in the neighboring

district of Mfantseman in the town of Saltpond. However, the closest

regional hospital with a large variety of services is located in Cape

Coast, approximately a 1 hour drive from Mankessim.

Community Volunteers

There are 7 Local Healers in the community, 3 of those are Herbalists

and 4 are Spiritual Healers.  These local healers usually service the

community members who have traditional religious beliefs. The local

healers are paid per service provided.

Current Community Initiatives

The school building currently being used is old and unsafe for children as it has developed cracks and does not have electricity. Construction of new building has been stalled (roof is not on yet) as the former contractor was transferred to another location.

Egyankwaa has an established CDF through the GB

Microfinance program Egyuankwa Cdf.pngsince June 2011 with a designated

part of a building at the center of the community. The CDF currently offers savings and loans. There are 6 active Susus

in the community that offer savings plans and loans. The usage of Susus in the community is big as they offer similar products to the CDF and are more flexible, so a lot of people turn to them. However savings have increased with the presence of the CDF as people find it convenient due to proximity and familiarity. People here, as in most of our communities, live on a day to day basis.
