Ekumfi Akwakrom is directly off the main road, the Accra –
Cape Coast Highway, which gives the community strong accessibility.
Public transportation is easily available for community members.
Available Medical Facilities
There is a government clinic located in Eyisam, a neighbouring community,
which is approximately a 10 minute drive away. The Essuesyhia Clinic
is a larger facility and is also about a 5 minute drive from Akwakrom. The
nearest Regional Hospital is in Saltpond, which is a 15-20 minute drive.
As Akwakrom is located on the main Accra-Cape Coast Highway, medical
facilities are easily accessible to community members however they
must prioritize their health by saving to afford transportation to these
facilities.
District Information
The Ekumfi District has 57 communities with a total population of
around 65,775. There are 7 CHPS Zones servicing the Ekumfi area,
which are equipped with Community Nurses, Midwives and
Volunteers. There are 5 Public and Private Clinics in the district that
offer more services than the local CHPS Zones. The closest district
hospital is in the neighboring district of Mfantseman in the town of
Saltpond. However, the closest regional hospital with a large
variety of services is located in Cape Coast, approximately a
1 hour drive from Mankessim.
Community Volunteers
There is 1 government trained community health volunteer in Akwakrom. They weigh and measure children as well as assist in vaccinations. There is also 1 traditional birth attendant who assists women in giving birth in the comfort of their home. Traditional birth attendants are trained by midwives to identify when the situation is beyond their control and when to refer to the hospital. Traditional birth attendants usually service the community members who have traditional religious beliefs. Traditional birth attendants are paid per service provided.

Current Community Initiatives
Although there is not a Community Development Fund, there is a Village Savings and Loans Association located in the community, which offers community members the ability to safely save.
