Arimae Medical Access

Arimae is a community in the Panama province, located about

right off of the Panamerican highway and about a 4 hour drive from the

Panama City airport.  The nearby town of Santa Fe has its own health

center which is maintained by Panama's Ministry of Health, MINSA

(Ministerio de Salud).  However, the brand new health center frequently

lacks a full pharmacy and the staff regularly lacks capacity to see all

the patients each day.

Community Demographics

Arimae is home to about 587 people and has about 103 homes,

with an average of 5-6 inhabitants per home.  Arimae is an

indigenous community, but what makes it unique is that the community

is split evenly between two different indigenous groups: the Embera

and the Wounaan.  The two different indigenous groups descend from

common ancestors; they both live and dress similarly, but each has its

own language.  When they converse, the two different groups typically

use Spanish.

Brigade Site Information

In Arimae, medical/dental clinics are hosted in a community building.  The

space is very open and allows patients do see all aspects of the clinic

as it goes on around them.  Volunteers working in Arimae will see

an average of 90 patients per day, and doctors typically spend about

15 minutes with each patient.  Brigades are able to provide an average

of 5-6 adult charlas a day, totaling about 6 hours of adult health education

each brigade.  It is very important to separate the adult and children's

charlas at this community because the open space prevents the group

from visibly splitting up parents and children for health workshop

discussions.
