Apacilagua Healthcare Access
Apacilagua is a community located in the municipality of the same name Apacilagua, about 30 minutes away from the department of Choluteca. The community has access to a local health center that is at most a 20 minute walk for community members. This local health center is known as a CESAMO, which is the larger of the two different types of health centers provided by the government. It is usually staffed by at least one doctor and several nurses. On occasion, community members have access to a dentist. Should a visitor to the health center require more medical attention than can be given at the center, community members can travel to the hospital in San Lorenzo, Valle most commonly by bus. Overall, Apacilagua has a decent health center that is readily accessible.
Community Demographics
Apacilagua is home to about 2,687 people and has about 900 homes, with an average of 5 inhabitants per home. It is a large community found encased between about 8 other surrounding communities. Since the health center is in Apacilagua, surrounding community members must walk a short distance in order to utilize the health center.
Brigade Site Information
Brigades in Apacilagua are held at the school. The school is large and spread out, with about 6 classrooms for brigade stations and plenty of outdoor space. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and volunteers are able to provide 5-6 educational charlas a day. Each brigade sees an average of 300 patients per day. Current Status
Last Visit: 3/11/2014
This past March, a group of volunteers from Carnegie Mellon visited Apacilagua on their brigade. With the help of both Honduran and US health care professionals, they saw a total of 750 medical patients over three days, as well as 79 dental patients. Patients came from about 8 different surrounding communities to receive medical care on the brigade.
