Amapala Healthcare Access

Amapala is a community that has access to a health center in the center of the community. This health center is known as a CESAMO, which is the larger of the two different types of health centers provided by the government. It is usually staffed by at least one doctor and several nurses. On occasion, community members have access to a dentist. Should a visitor to the health center require more medical attention than can be given at the center, community members can travel  20 minutes by bus to the hospital in San Lorenzo. Overall, Amapala has a decent health center that is readily accessible.

Amapala is home to about 7,603 people and has about 2,540 homes, with an average of 3-4 inhabitants per home.

 

 

 

Brigade Site Information

Since space is limited in the health center, brigades are held at the naval center. The naval base is spacious and spread out and allows plenty of space for each station of our clinic. Doctors spend an average of 10 minutes with each patient and volunteers are able to provide 5-6 educational charlas a day.  Each brigade sees an average of 300 patients per day. Current Status

Last Visit: 6/08/2014

This past June, a group of volunteers from Erie Students visited Amapala on their brigade.  With the help of both Honduran and US health care professionals, they saw a total of 832 medical patients as well as 82 dental patients over the course of their clinic days. Patients came from 12 different surrounding communities to receive medical care on the brigade.
