Alto de Cristo Medical Access

Alto de Cristo is located in the Darién province along the Pan-American

Highway, near the town of Santa Fe.  The community does not have its

own healthcare center, so its community members must travel to Santa

Fe in order to receive medical and dental treatment, both for routine

and emergency treatment. 

Community Demographics

Alto de Cristo is home to about 220 people and has about 60 homes,
with an average of 3-4 inhabitants per home.  Alto de Cristo is

primarily a Latino community, but there are a few Emberá and

Guna communities nearby that may send community members to

members in Alto de Cristo typically earn their living off of their land.

Many community members are farmers or cattle ranchers. The

main products from Alto de Cristo's farms are plantains, beans,

corn, rice, and yuca.  Additionally, a few members of Alto de Cristo are

employed in manual labor in nearby communities.

Brigade Site Information

Medical/dental brigades in Alto de Cristo are typically held at the

community's elementary school.  The school is small; it has 4

classrooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and an informatics room. 

Medical/dental brigades hold on station in each of the classrooms

during their clinics.  The school currently caters to 77 students.
