Abisinia Healthcare Access
Abisinia has a health center that was built by the Nicaraguan
government about 15 years ago. The center has 3 consultation
rooms, a pharmacy area, and a small lobby. It is staffed by two
medical doctors. The main problem with the health center is that
they do not have any medicine, so the patients have to travel to
Jinotega to buy them. Most community members will not purchase
the medicines recommended to them because they can not afford
them, or can not afford to take a day off work because they need the
income in order to feed their families.
Community Demographics
Abisinia is home to around 9,900 people and has about 1800 homes,
with an average of 5.5 inhabitants per home. There are about 2,000
children between the ages of 0 to 5 and 3,500 children between the
ages of 6 to 14.
Brigade Site Information
Medical brigades use the Abisinia primary school as their brigade
site. The intake and charla stations are often held outside of the
health center. The traige station, consultation rooms, dental station,
and pharmacy are located inside various classrooms of the school.
Current Community Initiatives
There are currently no other community initiatives taking place in
Abisinia. The Community Health Workers program is currently being
developed in Nicaragua and will be initiated in this community in the
near future.
