Top Three Needs Expressed
The top three needs expressed by community members are latrines in every household, a better water source, and a brigade to provide better access to the nearby health center.
San Agustin is located in the south of Honduras, near the Pacific Ocean. It is located on flat land near a large river, which often makes transportation difficult during the rainy season.
San Agustin has a primary school, with kindergarten through grade 6th being taught there. There are 6 rooms and 6 teachers, one for each grade. The kindergarten is taught by a volunteer from the community. There are a total of 247 students attending the school. To attend school beyond 6th grade, students must travel to Namasigue, which is about an hour away walking.
This community has a gravity based system built with help from Catholic Relief Services in 1990. The system is connected to about 204 houses; however, the water source does not have enough water to properly provide the necessary amount of water to each house. One of the greatest needs expressed by the community is an improved water system connected to all houses.
This community does not have a health center. The closest health center is in San Rafael, 30 minutes walking distance away. This health center is a CESAR, or the smaller of the two different types of health centers that the Honduran government provides. Here, patients can only see a nurse for consultations. To see a doctor or dentist, they must walk ever further to larger health centers in the area. The biggest health problems in San Agustin are respiratory problems.
Most people in this community work in agriculture, both for their own consupmtion and commercial sale. One of the most common items to grow are cashews fruit. Some community members have small businesses to process the cashews that other community members harvest. Many community members also find temporary work on melon plantations, where they may earn around $5 a day. The community members do have a community bank and access to credit.
This community is very well organized and runs brigades well. They have a lot of support from various community groups.
