The top needs expressed by the key community members are improvements to the existing water system, electricity and public health infrastructure such as latrines, pilas, cement floors and eco-stoves.

Education

Mata de Platano's educational system includes Kinder, Primary (1st-6th) and Middle (7th-9th). There are 9 students in Kinder and 85 in the primary and middle school.  The school consists of 6 classrooms and 6 teachers.

Water

In the community of Mata de Planato they have a gravity water system however it is in need of repairs.  Currently there are 85 houses connected to the system however, they do not chlorinate the water.

 

Health

This community has a CESAR, or the smaller of the two different types of health centers that the Honduran government offers.  This health center is only staffed by a nurse and serves many surrounding smaller towns as well as the main community. The most common illnesses in this comunity are common cold, diabetes, hypertension, skin infections, conjunctivitis, and head lice.

 

 

 

Socio-Economics

The main source of income in this community comes from agricultural work.  The community members grow coffee and peppers.  They have a community bank structure however it is currently not functioning within the community.
