Medical Program in La Chorrera

The chief health problems affecting children in the community are respiratory illnesses and cold-like symptoms. Adults in the community report cases of high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, ciculatory issues, and gastroenterological issues. Five community members have been trained by the local health center as Community Health Workers. In this role, the volunteers provide basic medical attention to community members so that they don't have to travel to the health center for care. They also follow up with brigade patients requiring follow-up care (e.g., diabetic and hypertensive patients).

By running a Medical Brigade in La Chorrera, we also hope to reach members of the neighboring communities of El Barro, Lomas Limpias, Río Azul, Las Toreras, El Suyatío, and Jacaleapa with medical care.

Dental Program in La Chorrera

In working closely with the medical program, the dental program provides fillings, extractions, and fluoride treatments as a standard part of medical brigades. Most community members do not have regular access to dental care due to the lack of dentist within a reasonable distance.

Engineering Program in La Chorrera

The engineering program works in conjunction with the water program to ensure water projects are maintained and economically sustainable. Because the existing water system in La Chorrera does not meet the needs of the community, Engineering Brigades can make an impact by completing an analysis of the system and possibilities for its expansion.

Water Program in La Chorrera

The water system in La Chorrera provides clean, drinkable water to the entire community every other day. Water is pumped to a holding tank where it is chlorinated before being distributed throuhout the network. All households also use in-home water filters that were distributed by the German Cooperation in Honduras.

Public Health Program in La Chorrera

While 89% of the homes in La Chorrera have latrines and pilas, the community members desire repairs or replacements of the existing infrastructure which may be deteriorating. Most houses lack a proper shower area, which is a top need expressed by community members. Only 53 homes have an eco-stove, while 65 use a traditional stove.

Business Program in La Chorrera

The caja rural (a community bank run by residents) in La Chorrera has been a recognized legal entity since 2000. This caja rural provides access to savings and loans that would otherwise be unattainable. Apart from the caja rural, no other groups have organized economic activities in La Chorrera (i.e., family stores or micro-enterprises). The majority of people in the community work in agriculture to support their families.
