Top Three Needs Expressed
The top three needs expressed by people in La Candelaria are a better school building, better in-home sanitation infrastructure, and a quality water system.
La Candelaria has a kingergarten with 18 students and one teacher. The primary school, Escuela Rural Mixta Gloria Figueroa de Lopez, has 4 classrooms which serve 78 students. They have the support of two teachers.
The current water system in La Candelaria was constructed in 2004. It serves 80% of the population on a continual basis, and they chlorinate the water every 8 days. Nonetheless, community members have asked for an improvement in the conduction line.
Community members suffer from many illnesses that are common in the communities where Global Brigades has a presence. Some of these illnesses are preventible with better in-home public health infraestructure. Only 20 of the 130 homes have a pila (water storage basin), 65 have concrete floors, and 20 have proper latrines. All homes have traditional stoves which often cause upper respiratory problems for those living in the home.
People in La Candelaria work in agriculture harvesting corn and beans. There is currently no support in the form of savings and loans, as no community bank has been formed.
