Amapala is located in the south of Honduras in the Valle municipality.

 

 

Education

 

 

 

 On the island of Amapala there is an urban and a rural area with a total of 1,600 students and 44 teachers. The rural area has 11 primary schools and 11 kinder schools. The urban area has 2 primary schools and 2 kinder schools. There is also a vocational institution 20 teachers with educational courses in tourism and commerce.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Water

The water system in Amapala was constructed  12 years ago by SANAA. The majority of the issues with the current system are in the urban areas. However, each of the smaller neighborhoods have their own projects with water committees.

 

 

 

Health

Amapala has a CESAMO health center in the community. This facility is the larger of two different types of health centers that the Honduran government offers where care is available from nurses and doctors. The most common illnesses in the Amapala are respiratory infections, diarrhea, and skin infections.

 

 

Socio-economics

There is a variety of employment on the island of Amapala. Community members are employed as shrimp farmers, fisherman, as well as in traditional agriculture producing corn. Because of the naval base located on Amapala, much employment also comes from government jobs.
