University of Maryland is a chapter of Global Dental Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to dental & medical care and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. nnIn conjunction with our Medical & Dental Programs, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring. University of Maryland Dental Brigade January 2022 Panama
Jan 09, 2022 - Jan 15, 2022

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Dental Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Ghana. Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists in urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Dental Brigades also focuses on prevention with dental hygiene workshops. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. A typical brigade structure includes three clinic days and a Holistic Model Day. This unique day allows for Medical/Dental brigaders to experience one of Honduras’ other programs: Architecture, Business, Engineering, Microfinance, Public Health or Water Brigades. Through these Holistic Model Days, volunteers are able to tackle non-health related issues that are often times the root cause of common illnesses seen on Medical and Dental Brigades. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.

University of Maryland Medical/Dental TeleBrigade January 2021 Honduras
Jan 10, 2021 - Jan 17, 2021

Global Brigades offers Medical TeleBrigades, a virtual international medical volunteer program for people who care about equitable access to healthcare. During a Medical TeleBrigade, participants have the opportunity to apply and build upon their medical knowledge through skill-based volunteering, foster cultural competency through virtual immersion, and deliver real impact through our local team by participating in live medical urban clinics and supporting rural clinics. TeleBrigades align with/fit in/supports Global Brigades’ initiatives to actively break down the barriers that people face by allowing them to attain proper medical services regardless of their location or socioeconomic status. Rural clinics reach partner communities on a quarterly basis, while our urban clinic provides daily services and facilitates professional medical care and access to medicine at low cost. All year round, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

U Maryland GDB - Jan 2014 Panama
Jan 05, 2014 - Jan 11, 2014

Dental Brigade volunteers will set up temporary clinics in pre-identified communities in Eastern Panama to provide health care where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months. Students on the brigade are given the opportunity to shadow licensed health care professionals while learning about local Panamanian culture. A typical Medical/Dental Brigade clinic consists of six stations: Intake, Triage, Consultation, Dental, Charla (health education), and Pharmacy. Electronic patient records are collected during the brigade to ensure patient follow-up as well as to monitor overall community health trends. Between brigades, the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conduct community health worker training aimed at empowering local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care. For every student who volunteers on a Global Medical Brigade, sixty patients can see a doctor who otherwise would not be able to.

UMD Dental Brigades January 2013 Honduras
Jan 08, 2013 - Jan 14, 2013

University of Maryland Dental Brigades is a chapter of Global Brigades, the world\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. This is the University of Maryland\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s first dental mission trip. We will be collaborating directly with the Global Brigades chapter at the University of Wisconsin, as well as more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually.

We currently have three volunteer dentists who will accompany us to the Honduras and provide services to members of a community in need. This will also be a great volunteer opportunity for any interested pre-dental students looking for clinical, shadowing, and/or community service experience.

For this mission trip, we are seeking the donation of dental supplies (i.e. dental bibs, toothbrushes, floss, gloves, etc.) as well as any monetary donations toward the overall cost. Please see posted files for an informational pamphlet and a comprehensive list of all needed supplies for the trip.

Students participating in Medical/Dental Brigades empower rural communities in Honduras, Panama and Ghana by providing comprehensive health services to those with limited access to healthcare. We mobilize licensed medical professionals, community health workers, and thousands of student volunteers annually to facilitate much-needed Medical and Dental Brigades.

Dental Brigade volunteers provide urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops.

If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at:
