University of Connecticut is a chapter of Global Business Brigades, an international movement of university students and professionals building economic opportunities in the developing world. We work alongside promising entrepreneurs and experienced year-round staff to create financial opportunities in remote, rural, and under resourced areas of Honduras and Ghana. We work with communities to build community-owned banks to provide access to loans, savings accounts and financial literacy for community members. Volunteers assist in consulting micro-enterprises, assessing loan capacity payments and providing financial literacy workshops to families. nnIn conjunction with our Business Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring. Global Brigades offers Business TeleBrigades, a virtual international volunteer program for people who care about economic opportunities in under-resourced communities. Business TeleBrigades volunteers apply their business skills, foster cultural competency through virtual immersion, and with the support of our local teams and mentors from Deloitte or Accenture, create consulting deliverables to help grow small business clients from rural communities in Panama. TeleBrigades use virtual meeting software and on-the-ground economic development professionals to facilitate meaningful experiences for both volunteers and our clients. This innovative program incorporates live consultations, tangible consulting deliverables, and the opportunity for affordable loan capital to help clients execute on their business plans.

University of Connecticut Business Brigade January 2017 Panama
Jan 07, 2017 - Jan 13, 2017

Global Brigades offers 7-day Microfinance Brigades throughout the year in Honduras and Panama. Microfinance Brigades volunteers provide financial literacy workshops and consultation to rural community banks. Throughout the brigade, volunteers divide into groups where they visit several families in their homes. During the community visits, volunteers develop an understanding of the families’ ways of life, aspirations and financial literacy. Following the visits, volunteers discuss their recommendations to the community bank on how they can improve their operations based on the information that was collected during the house visits. Additionally, students hold educational workshops with community members about the community bank focused on topics such as budgeting, savings incentives programs, and loans. At the end of week, students determine how they will allocate their Project Fund, whether it may be to an individual family or a lump sum donated to the community bank.
