Medical Brigades at UC Davis is a chapter of Global Brigades, the world\'s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The UCD chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually. Global Medical Brigades develops sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Annual Chapter Contribution
Jan 01, 2017 - Dec 31, 2017

Fundraise with your Global Medical Brigades chapter on campus to meet the minimum $1,500 USD annual chapter contribution. The annual chapter contribution directly supports the Sustainable Health Fund, which enables year-round health care in partner communities carried out by our local teams. The Sustainable Health Fund is a critical component of GB’s Sustainable Transition Plan. Once a partner community has met specific health and economic development goals and brigades are no longer necessary, GB transitions projects fully to the community and offers follow-up with our local staff. The more you fundraise, the more impact we make together!

UC Davis' undergraduate, nurse practitioner and physician assistant students will be partnering with UCLA and UC Riverside's Public Health Brigade in this 9 day Hybrid Brigade, which combines the aspects of a medicine and public health. During the clinic portion of the brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. During the public health portion of the brigade, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.

UC Davis Medical Brigade Ghana 2013
Mar 24, 2013 - Apr 01, 2013

Global Medical and Dental Brigades in Ghana work alongside each other on a 10-day long brigade in under-resourced communities around the central region of Ghana. Each medical and dental brigade incorporates a public health portion at the end of the 4 clinical days. The 10-day medical and public health brigade provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on communities while gaining hands-on experience in the field of international medicine. Prior to travel, volunteers collect medicines, recruit health professionals and fundraise. Once in Ghana, the team will visit one partner community to administer a 3-4 day-long clinic and conduct health workshops. During clinical days, community members are able to consult doctors and dentists, fill any necessary prescriptions, receive necessary dental care, and sit-in on health education lectures. At the end of the medical portion, volunteers then have a chance to build public health projects to address some of the environmental health issues. Public Health construction includes latrines, eco-stoves, and water filtration devices

Sarah Ansah - Incisional Hernia Repair Surgery
Jan 01, 1970 - Apr 02, 2015

Thank you to all contributors for raising $302.00 as of September 17, 2013!! Sarah Ansah is a 39 year old mother whose primary occupation is farming. The UC Davis Medical Brigade met Sarah in Akwakrom and found out that she underwent a vasectomy three years ago and has since developed an incisional hernia. This hernia has reached a large size and has become a physical and financial burden to her family. She does not make enough money to continue care outside of the Brigade Clinic, but wants to address her clinical situation with the hopes of reducing her hernia completely. Thanks to UC Davis\' support Sarah has underwent the initial consultations at Korle Bu hospital in the capital city Accra and has had the necessary diagnostic testing done. She has officially been cleared to proceed with the incisional hernia repair surgery and will be admitted to the hospital on Monday December 9, 2013. Sarah\'s surgeon explained that it is required to purchase the Mesh for Sarah\'s surgery, which is not covered under Ghanian National Health Insurance and costs 500 GHC. This is because her skin will be pulled too far apart and is basically a skin graft to put the skin back together and heal properly. In addition to the Mesh, the anesthesia will not be covered under National Health Insurance and will cost approximately 700 GHC. Totalling 1300 GHC. Benjamin, Sarah\'s eldest son, can stay at a nearby hostel, which will cost 2 GHC a night plus the cost of his food. Sarah is expected to be admitted for no more than one week and thankfully accommodation and food for Sarah is covered by insurance. The breakdown for the expenses are as follows: Milk, Milo and sugar for 2 mandatory blood donors: 10 GHC Benjamin\'s hostel 1 week + food: 14 GHC + 70 GHC = 85 GHC Mesh: 500 GHC Anesthesia: 700 GHC Transportation to Korle Bu in Accra: 150 GHC Total: 1445 GHC This 1445 GHC is approximately equal to $720. Let us keep the fundraising momentum going and ensure Sarah can have this life altering surgery!
