Texas A&M University is a chapter of Global Dental Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to dental & medical care and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. nnIn conjunction with our Medical & Dental Programs, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring. Texas A&M University Dental Brigade August 2021 Honduras
Aug 01, 2021 - Aug 07, 2021

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Dental Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Ghana. Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists in urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Dental Brigades also focuses on prevention with dental hygiene workshops. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. A typical brigade structure includes three clinic days and a Holistic Model Day. This unique day allows for Medical/Dental brigaders to experience one of Honduras’ other programs: Architecture, Business, Engineering, Microfinance, Public Health or Water Brigades. Through these Holistic Model Days, volunteers are able to tackle non-health related issues that are often times the root cause of common illnesses seen on Medical and Dental Brigades. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.

Texas A&M Dental Brigade December 2013 Ghana
Dec 28, 2013 - Jan 06, 2014

Global Medical and Dental Brigades in Ghana work alongside each other on a 10-day long brigade in under-resourced communities around the central region of Ghana. Each medical and dental brigade incorporates a public health portion at the end of the 4 clinical days. The 10-day medical and public health brigade provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on communities while gaining hands-on experience in the field of international medicine. Prior to travel, volunteers collect medicines, recruit health professionals and fundraise. Once in Ghana, the team will visit one partner community to administer a 3-4 day-long clinic and conduct health workshops. During clinical days, community members are able to consult doctors and dentists, fill any necessary prescriptions, receive necessary dental care, and sit-in on health education lectures. At the end of the medical portion, volunteers then have a chance to build public health projects to address some of the environmental health issues. Public Health construction includes latrines, eco-stoves, and water filtration devices.

Jan 2013 Texas A&M Dental Brigade - Panama
Jan 06, 2013 - Jan 12, 2013

Dental Brigade volunteers will set up temporary clinics in pre-identified communities in Eastern Panama to provide health care where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months. Students on the brigade are given the opportunity to shadow licensed health care professionals while learning about local Panamanian culture. A typical Medical/Dental Brigade clinic consists of six stations: Intake, Triage, Consultation, Dental, Charla (health education), and Pharmacy. Electronic patient records are collected during the brigade to ensure patient follow-up as well as to monitor overall community health trends. Between brigades, the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conduct community health worker training aimed at empowering local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care. For every student who volunteers on a Global Medical Brigade, sixty patients can see a doctor who otherwise would not be able to.

January 2012 Texas A&M Dental Brigade
Jan 08, 2012 - Jan 14, 2012

Dental Brigades is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world\'s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Texas A&M chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually.

Dental Brigades provides Hondurans with dental hygiene care, proper oral hygiene instructions, restorative care to the teeth that can be saved and extractions for the ones that cannot. A Dental Brigade consists of dental and dental hygiene student volunteers and dental professionals to provide dental care to in-need communities. The group functions like a mobile dental unit.

Dr. Ledet\'s Dental Brigades Fund
Jan 01, 1970 - Jan 06, 2013

Dr. Len Ledet was an inspiration to everyone he met. His smile and gracious attitude provided others with comfort, compassion, and joy. He touched the lives of each and every person who knew him and his faith was vibrant and reflective of his golden heart. For those who may not know, Dr. Ledet took a week trip to travel to Honduras giving dental care to the less fortunate through the Texas A&M Global Dental Brigades. This was just one of his many selfless services. He once spoke at a Texas A&M Pre-Dental Society meeting opening his speech with, “Do you know why I work so hard?” He answered with a picture of his four beautiful children. This shows Dr. Ledet’s love for his family as well as dentistry. He set an example for all to follow and his love will live on in the lives of many. The Texas A&M Global Dental Brigades is welcoming contributions on behalf of Dr. Len Ledet who was an unforgettable supporter of this organization and the epitome of devotion.
