Environmental Brigades at Ball State University is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Ball State chapter systematically works with more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran, Panamanian, and Ghanaian community members annually.

Environmental Brigades volunteers work with rural families and community leaders to improve environmental sustainability and livelihood. During the brigade, volunteers utilize household surveys conducted by Global Brigades staff and face-to-face discussions to connect with the community members and understand their environmental needs, and work alongside them to implement solutions to reforest, farm sustainably, and better manage both inorganic and organic wastes. The planting of native tree species restores the biodiversity and nutrient-cycling directly on the families’ land. By creating and utilizing organic fertilizers and natural pesticides, as well as diversifying the number and placement of agricultural plants, soil nutrients are improved while erosion is minimized. Agricultural yields can be increased without dramatically altering the lifestyle of the rural farmers, while in the meantime, the cost of sustaining the farm can be lessened by breaking away from petrochemical fertilizers. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to educate community members on the hazards of waste burning, as well as the environmental and health benefits of setting up composting along with other waste diversion methods.

Global Brigades offers 7-day Environmental Brigades throughout the year in Panama. Environmental Brigades provide student volunteers with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in environmental management and education by empowering community members in rural communities. During brigades, volunteers spend time with environmental committees to better understand the region's pressing environmental concerns and potential for improvement. Through interactive workshops and the implementation of physical projects, student volunteers provide the education and physical assistance necessary for these families to sustain long-term behavioral change, which will benefit the well-being of not only themselves but their surrounding environment as well. Subsequent brigades build on each other and therefore, projects are continued through successive phases year after year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with our community leaders to ensure the continuation of projects started by brigades and to provide follow-up on community members’ feedback as well as next steps.

Ball State Environmental Brigade
Dec 15, 2013 - Dec 22, 2013

Environmental Brigades volunteers at Ball State will spend 7 days in Panama working alongside families of the rural communities of Piriati Embera and Embera Puru. They will be learning about the biodiversity of a tropical region and the potential of ecological productivity of the community members’ land by utilizing environmentally sustainable methods of agriculture that mimics the diversity and balance of plant life and living organisms which exist in a healthy ecosystem. Volunteers will also create, explain, and incorporate the use of organic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides in order to boost soil nutrients naturally and deter common pests and fungi that normally bring harvest yields down. Additionally, participants in the brigade will research into and share alternative methods of waste management through informative materials and interactive workshops. A key component of brigade is to help raise the community\'s overall awareness of relevant environmental issues and their understanding of the repercussions of a degrading environment socially and economically while always keeping cultural sensitivity in mind. With these projects being picked up by student volunteers from various chapters across North America month after month, the environmental health of the community can be steadily improved while ensuring positive, lasting changes for generations to come
